Diagnostic Medical Sonography

While sonography includes many imaging modalities, the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at Lawson State Community college focuses specifically on cardiac ultrasound. Cardiac Sonography is the use of high frequency sound waves to create images of the heart in order to assess cardiac structure, function and diagnose various medical conditions. Registered Cardiac Sonographers use specialized, non-invasive equipment to obtain and record images of the heart, perform measurements and calculations, analyze findings and produce preliminary reports for review by Cardiologists.

Benefits of Choosing a Career in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Field

Choosing a career path as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is one of the smartest decisions you can make.  There is currently a shortage of Cardiac Sonographers (which Lawson's program is designed to focused on), so hospitals and other health care agencies will pay top dollar for trained sonographers who are trained in this specialty.  In fact, the median salary for seasoned sonographers is 75K with entry level jobs in the 60K+ range.  Sonographers can also pick up additional certificates and skill sets and perform ultrasounds of the abdomen (for pregnant patients), muscular skeletal, breast, and more

Our Associates in Applied Science (AAS) two-year degrees range from 60 to 64 credits and will equip you to enter the job market skilled and employable.  To  increase your earning power, students should always continue their education to continue to grow and learn in their fields of study.

Cardiac Sonography

The purpose of the Cardiac Sonography Program is to provide students with cognitive, psychomotor and affective learning experiences to prepare graduates to perform cardiac ultrasound exams safely, competently, professionally and to function as an entry level sonographer in the healthcare system. We partner with multiple hospitals in the area to ensure our students get the highest quality training available.
