English (Concentration)

English, Communication, and Journalism are areas of concentration within the Languages and Literature Department that prepare students to transfer into Liberal Arts majors at varying four-year colleges. At the two-year level, choosing a concentration should not be confused with declaring a major; rather, it is a program track that is recognized by Alabama Transfers for the specific purpose of transferring to a four-year college. Upon completion of this course of study, students are awarded a two-year Associate of Arts degree that is transferable. If you are interested in studying literature, writing, teaching, journalism or communication, come and explore the Languages and Literature Department at Lawson State Community College. These concentrations can open doors to rewarding career pathways including journalism, broadcasting, marketing, social media, writing, editing, public relations, education, and more. Benefits of Choosing a Career in the English Field

English and Communicatons are two of the most versatile areas of study because they can prepare students for many career options. Developing your oral and written skills can set you on a pathway to success in a variety of industries. Those who can speak and write well can be irreplaceable in the workforce. An English or Communications degree can lead to various career pathways including serving as an editor, teacher or professor, publisher, grant writer, technical writer, screenwriter, journalist, public speaking, politician, social media manager, or a marketing or public relations specialist. It can also prepare students for law school and other professional schools. The Associate of Arts (AA) is a two-year degree requiring 60 to 64 transferable credits. That means that once students graduate from Lawson State, they will be able to enter a four-year college as a junior and secure a four-year degree.
