Lawson State Community College's Social & Behavioral Science Department is leading a month-long series of events in April to support student well-being during Mental Health Awareness Month. The lineup features expert-led sessions addressing stress management, meditation, healthy boundaries, domestic violence awareness, and academic-related anxieties.
Beginning April 1, the department invites all students, faculty, and staff to engage in these interactive and informative sessions held across both the Birmingham and Bessemer campuses along with one virtual workshop focused on academic stress.
The workshops are designed to offer practical tools for managing stress in everyday college life. Sessions are led by professionals from nursing, psychology, behavioral sciences, and student support services. Topics range from understanding the biology of stress to navigating test-taking anxiety and coping with pressures related to academic performance.
"Lawson State has an ongoing commitment to creating a supportive learning environment," said Carlos Morris, department chair. "We want our students as well as staff and faculty to know that Lawson State is a college where mental wellness is valued and prioritized."
Mr. Morris also added that stress affects every part of the campus community-faculty, staff, and students alike
"When individuals actively engage in awareness efforts, it helps create a healthier, more supportive environment for everyone," he said. "The topics shared throughout the month are designed to provide valuable tools, strategies, and insights that will benefit all who participate and support overall well-being across campus."
