(Birmingham, AL) March 23, 2026---Dr. Cynthia T. Anthony, president of Lawson State Community College, was recently named to the UAB Medical West hospital board. Her appointment comes as healthcare and higher education work together to address wide-ranging challenges.
"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Cynthia Anthony to our Board of Directors," said Keith Pennington, CEO of UAB Medical West, an affiliate of the UAB Health System. "As President of Lawson State Community College and a longstanding leader in the Bessemer community and the Bessemer Area Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Anthony brings a deep commitment to education, workforce development, and community engagement. Her insight and experience will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen the health and well-being of the patients we serve."
Investing in the Region's Healthcare Future
Dr. Anthony's appointment is timely as the college continues to expand its role in healthcare workforce development. Her appointment also reflects the hospital's commitment to expanding educational partnerships that support the healthcare workforce.
Lawson State's longstanding partnership with UAB Medical West has been invaluable for students. Those enrolled in the college's Rural Healthcare Initiative have rotations there, and the hospital serves as a clinical rotation site for RN students.
On campus, an $11 million building renovation project is making more room for programs in the health professions. The updated facility is expected to create a collaborative learning environment for students who will become nurses, radiologic technicians, sonographers, and emergency medical technicians.v
Meeting the Needs of West Jefferson County
Dr. Anthony, who has led Lawson State since 2021, has been a vocal champion for community and workforce initiatives.
"This is an important time in the field, and I'm honored to join the UAB Medical West board and contribute to the important work ahead," said Dr. Anthony. "More than ever, the market needs clear-eyed vision and innovative leadership to meet healthcare demands, whether that is advancing patient care or strengthening the pipeline of qualified personnel."
She added that she is energized by the prospect of working with other board members.
"We look forward to partnering with her to advance our mission and expand opportunities for collaboration across our community," Mr. Pennington said.
