Federal Funding to Expand Workforce Training and Student Success

Lawson State is set to receive more than $2.1 million in federal funds to support student success and workforce development as the college prepares students for high-demand careers across Birmingham and central Alabama.

"We appreciate the investment being made by the U.S. Department of Education and strong advocates like U.S. Sen. Katie Britt," Lawson State Community College President Dr. Cynthia T. Anthony said, following the announcement. "Both the funding and our congressional leaders' willingness to champion the work of historically black colleges, universities and community colleges like Lawson State help us make a meaningful difference in the lives of students."

The funding was announced at the HBCU Summit at the White House. For Lawson State, the investment is squarely focused on helping students and strengthening institutional impact.

"There is more demand than ever for expanded workforce training opportunities, career readiness programs, and overall access to the types of technology and equipment today's students must master before they leave college," Dr. Anthony added. "The funding will help us address those needs, all while supporting our broader mission."

The college also expects to invest the funding in stronger academic programs and innovation efforts tied to building talent pipelines in the region. "We consider ourselves a gateway to opportunity, and this investment recognizes the critical role that HBCCs play in advancing economic mobility," Dr. Anthony added, "and we are certainly grateful for the support."
