Lawson State Community College's Adult Education Program will take part in the three-day "Shine a Light on Your Future" campaign, taking place September 16-18 as part of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. This special event is designed to celebrate adult learners, engage families, and connect adults with free educational and career opportunities that can help achieve their goals.
As part of its ongoing commitment to adult and family literacy, Lawson State recently received a $10,000 Adult Literacy Grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. This grant will help expand literacy services and provide families with opportunities to strengthen foundational skills, pursue educational goals, and create pathways to greater economic opportunity.
Since 2009, Adult Education and Family Literacy Week has been recognized each September to raise awareness about the importance of literacy, numeracy, and digital skills, while promoting access to educational opportunities for adults who need them.
"Our goal is to use Adult Education and Family Literacy Week not only to celebrate our students, but also to reach adults and families who may not realize these opportunities are available to them at no cost," said Charlette White, Director of Adult Education at Lawson State Community College.
She added, "Literacy impacts the entire family. When we help a parent strengthen their English, improve their academic skills, earn a high school credential, or prepare for a career, the impact can extend beyond that individual and into the home. We want families throughout our community to know that Lawson State Adult Education is here to help them take that next step."
Throughout the three-day campaign, participants will have a chance to engage in activities focused on family engagement, student development, and community outreach.
If adults are learning English, participants are invited to attend ESL Family Literacy Night. Through interactive activities, adults and their children can learn together while strengthening their English language and literacy skills. This activity will take place on the main campus at 3060 Wilson Rd SW, Birmingham, AL 35221.
Adult Education Literacy Day will feature interactive learning stations focused on digital literacy, math skills, and practical learning activities. Participants will discover how literacy extends beyond reading and writing to include the skills you need to succeed in education, employment, and everyday life. This activity will take place on the main campus at 3060 Wilson Rd SW, Birmingham, AL 35221.
Participants will have the opportunity to connect with Lawson State Adult Education faculty and staff during morning drop-off at Oxmoor Elementary School on 3600 Sydney Drive, Birmingham, AL 35211. Parents will have the opportunity to learn more about the college's free Adult Education programs and services and discover how these resources can support their educational and career goals.
Throughout the campaign, residents will see the Dollar General Literacy Foundation's yellow glasses, a recognizable symbol of literacy and the opportunities it creates. This initiative highlights the Foundation's support while helping raise awareness about the importance of adult and family literacy throughout the communities Lawson State serves.
