Lawson State Joins National HBCU Digital Library Effort to Preserve Black College History

Lawson State Community College is proud to announce its partnership with the HBCU Digital Library Trust, a collaborative effort to preserve and share the rich cultural heritage, scholarship, and history of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Through this exciting partnership, Lawson State will join a growing number of HBCUs working to digitize and expand access to important historical resources. The college's collection will be available Spring 2026, offering students, faculty, and researchers a powerful new tool for learning and discovery. The overall collective, which represents an ongoing effort, can be viewed here.

Here's what the Lawson community and others can expect as the LSCC collection and those of other colleges come together:

  • Expanded digital access to photographs, manuscripts, yearbooks, and archival materials from HBCUs across the nation;
  • New opportunities for teaching, research, and engagement with primary sources that illuminate the impact of HBCUs on education, culture, and society; and
  • Preservation efforts that ensure the legacy and contributions of HBCUs remain accessible for future generations.

"We encourage students, faculty, and staff to explore the HBCU Digital Library and consider how these valuable resources can support coursework, research, and personal exploration," said Dr. Nacola Adams, director of library services for the college.

"The HBCU Digital Library Trust initiative is more than a preservation project; it's a movement to safeguard and celebrate the voices, stories, and achievements that shape who we are," Dr. Adams added.

"When we support this effort, we honor our history, empower our present, and ensure that future generations can learn from the legacy of excellence built by historically black colleges and universities," she said.
