Next-Level EMS Education Arrives at Lawson State with Mobile SimRig

Lawson State Community College is taking emergency medical services (EMS) education to the next level with the addition of a state-of-the-art SimRig - a mobile simulation unit designed to replicate real world emergency scenarios.

"This is about giving our students hands-on, scenario-based clinical training," said Dr. Sherika Derico, associate dean for health professions. "The SimRig helps in many ways: it enhances critical thinking, clinical decision-making, teamwork, and assists instructors in teaching communication skills in a controlled, realistic environment."

"The SimRig provides a bridge between classroom learning and real world clinical application, preparing students for field readiness and licensure success." - Sherika Derico

Real-world Emergency Readiness

The SimRig was purchased through an Alabama Community College System Career Technical Education grant. The unit's mobility means it can serve multiple purposes: training students on campus and supporting community outreach initiatives whenever the EMS faculty want to give people a peek inside during public events.

Currently housed on Lawson State's Bessemer campus, the SimRig will eventually move to the new Health Professions Building on the Birmingham campus. "Because it's designed to be mobile, we can transport it between campuses or even to community training sites," Dr. Derico explained. "This flexibility ensures our students are prepared for field readiness and licensure success."
