Birmingham, AL - June 15, 2025 - Lawson State Community College is proud to announce the launch of "Cubs to Cougars," an initiative designed to help incoming students transition smoothly into college life and set the stage for student success.
The "Cubs to Cougars" program pairs first-year students ("Cubs") with experienced student mentors ("Cougars"), providing guidance, support, and resources throughout their first year at Lawson State. The program offers a variety of workshops, social events, and academic support services to foster a sense of community and belonging among new students.
"We recognize that the transition to college can be both exciting and challenging," said Stephon Adams, director of admissions for the college. "Cubs to Cougars is about making sure every student feels welcomed, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential."
In general, pre-college programs like "Cubs to Cougars" are helpful in giving incoming college students a sense of what to expect. Participants are able to readily adjust to their new environment, explore their academic interests in a low-pressure environment, and learn more about essential skills for success such as time management and how to advocate for themselves.
"We are all about setting first-year students up for success, academically and personnally," said Mr. Adams. "This is just one of the many ways we going about doing that at Lawson State."
Enrollment for Cubs to Cougars is free and open now for students who plan to start college during the Fall 2025 semester. Students who are interested in learning more about Cubs to Cougars can email admissions@lawsonstate.edu or call the Office of Admissions directly 205-929-3418 or 205-929-6309.
