Lawson State Community College is pleased to announce an upcoming art exhibition featuring 20 pieces by Birmingham-based artist Dewon Moton on Wednesday, December 3, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Library on the Birmingham Campus. Guests will enjoy live music and light refreshments as they experience an inspiring showcase of his artistry. The art exhibition will remain available for viewing until the end of December.
Mr. Moton, a native of Birmingham, creates art with a mission to spread love, hope, and positivity through his art. Imagination is at the center of it all.
"I've always believed the imagination is the most powerful tool we have," said Mr Moton. "Art taught me that worlds don't just appear you build them, line by line, stroke by stroke. My work is about showing people the possibility of shaping their lives in the same way I shape a mural: with intention, vision, and the courage to bring an idea into existence."
A natural artist since childhood, Mr. Moton has explored oils, sculpture, acrylics, multimedia, tattoo design, and custom fashion. While he works across many forms, his favorite medium is spray paint, which he uses to create the vibrant murals seen throughout the city.
His life's work has been a journey at the intersection of craft, community, and professionalism. It hasn't always been easy, but it has been worth it.
"It took me years to understand that being an artist could be a real career, but once I painted my first mural and saw its impact, I never looked back," Mr. Moton said.
"I've been a full-time muralist for almost a decade because I believe art should elevate communities, spark emotion, and make people stop and feel something. Every wall I touch is an opportunity to create a world people can step into, not just look at."
For this special exhibition, Moton will display 20 original works that highlight his artistic range and creative spirit. The collection will feature multimedia angels, graphite drawings, and mural-inspired pieces, each reflecting his unique vision and expressive style.
This event also aligns with Lawson State's continued commitment to celebrating and promoting the arts. The College is currently exploring the development of a dedicated gallery space on the Birmingham Campus an initiative that will further support community artists and create new opportunities for student engagement and hands on learning.
