Regional Air-Medical Services demonstration for current EMS students

It was an action filled day on the campus of Lawson State Community College as the Regional Air-Medical Services helicopter landed on the football field to teach the Emergency Management Services students a hands-on lesson. The students were eager to learn from the professionals, and faculty and staff members shared in their excitement.

"This experience was very eye-opening, it definitely showed me other options that I have with my EMT certification. I learned a lot about what they are doing and it demystified the process of air transport," said Kris Wells, Lawson State student.

The Regional Air-Medical Services team shared their knowledge and expertise with students showing them everything from the blood box that goes on every flight to the controls on the aircraft. The crew offered stories of memorable experiences along with expert tips and tricks of the trade that should make doing the complicated job a little easier. Crew members were not short on advice for current and future students considering their career field.

"Pay attention in school, work hard, have goals set throughout your nursing or EMS career that you want to reach. Work hard and study," said Ian Hannah, Regional Medical Services.

Local firefighters and paramedics participated in the simulation by having crews on scene to assist with the learning process. All the medical professionals showed students how they work together seamlessly in order to achieve the best outcome for those in need of medical assistance.

"We love getting out into the community doing this kind of stuff, getting to know the future providers in the area. This gives us an opportunity to show students that we are here when they need us, or if one of their patients' needs us," said Hannah.

"Regional Paramedical Services (RPS) offered to demonstrate to our students how to land a medical helicopter. This is a great educational experience for my current students. They witnessed how to land a helicopter in the event a patient needs to be transported to the hospital via air. We are providing our students with this opportunity so they will be diverse in their learning," said Mr. Cody Williams, Lawson State Community College EMS Program Director.
