Robert Holmes to Deliver Lawson State’s Commencement Address
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Robert Holmes Jr., Alabama Power’s senior vice president of Ethics and Corporate Concern and chairman of the Alabama Power Foundation, will speak for Lawson State Community College’s Annual Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. to be held at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center, East Exhibition Hall II.
Lawson State will confer degrees and certificates on 585 students who have satisfied requirements for graduation. The public is invited to share in this special occasion.
Holmes received his bachelor’s degree from Alabama A & M University and his engineering degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a graduate of several continuing education courses, including the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School; the Public Utility Management Program at the University of Georgia; and the “Leadership at the Peak” sponsored by the Center for Creative Leadership and the “Executive Leadership” program sponsored by the Southeastern Electric Exchange.
He is a member of several boards of directors, including those of the Boy Scouts of America, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham YMCA, A. G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club, American Association of Blacks in Energy, The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, Samford University, Ethics and Compliance Officer Association where he just completed a 2 year term as the Chair of the Board, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Josephson Institute of Ethics. He is actively involved in character education in K – 12. In addition, he brings focus on ethics in business to various institutions of higher education.
In February 2000, Holmes received the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award from the Boy Scouts of America for unselfish service to the youth of America and also received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America.
Holmes is a member of Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham. He is married to Camelia Holmes and they have two children and six grandchildren.
