State Family Shares Loss of Miriam Witherspoon

BIRMINGHAM, AL (April 21, 2009)
- Birmingham President Pro Tempore Miriam Witherspoon
leaves a tremendous void to be filled. Her untimely
passing is a tremendous loss not only for family
and friends, but for her district and Lawson
State Community College.
“Our college
family is deeply saddened
by the passing of Councilor Witherspoon,”
said Dr. Perry W. Ward, president of Lawson
State. “Our thoughts and prayers are with
her family as they mourn her passing and that
of her aunt.”
Dr. Ward and Councilor Witherspoon
worked together on numerous projects affecting
the college and the neighborhoods in District
7. “She and I had a mutual devotion for
our district and its impact on the greater city
of Birmingham,” said Ward. “She
was an outstanding individual and one of our
biggest supporters. She was an advocate for
every friend that she had.”
Throughout the years, Councilor
Witherspoon specifically supported or contributed
to the college’s academic and technology
advancements, community and cultural affairs
activities, and the beautification and capital
improvements. “A true public servant,
she was at the college often and we never regarded
her as a guest, but as one of the family,”
said Dr. Bruce Crawford, vice president of instruction
at Lawson State.
Witherspoon was no stranger to
Lawson State. She held many several town hall
meetings and informational sessions at the college.
On other occasions, she was present to participate
or support another activity. “She wore
the biggest smile and was always pleasant, said
Geri Albright, director of public relations
and community affairs. “Her concern was
always for the other person – never seeking
attention for herself.”
The contributions that Councilor
Witherspoon rendered to District 7 and Lawson
State will be longstanding. “She will
forever be remembered for her service and dedication,”
said Dr. Ward. “Tonight we will host the
Alabama Symphony Orchestra, an event that the
pro tem was instrumental in arranging. The program
will be dedicated in memory of our servant and
friend – Councilor Miriam Witherspoon.”
