Narrative:
Lawson State
Community College publishes a clear and appropriate statement of student rights
and responsibilities in the Student
Catalog and Handbook which is disseminated to the campus community. Student rights and responsibilities as
discussed in the Student Catalog and Handbook are further emphasized in the New
Student Orientation course, PSY 100 course syllabus.
The Student
Catalog and Handbook is available online to students and other college
constituents. Printed copies are
available upon request and can be found in the offices of major college
units.
The primary purpose of academic advisement
is to support students in their pursuit of meaningful educational programs that
will assist them in fulfilling goals. Academic advisement is provided for each
student at Lawson State Community College. Each student is expected to meet
with his/her academic advisor at least once each semester to arrange a schedule
of classes for the subsequent semester.
A student has the right of access to his/her
educational records and may
inspect and review the information contained therein. Exceptions to a student's
rights of access are stated in the College policy. Educational records refer to
all records maintained directly pertaining to an individual as a student. At the
postsecondary level, parents have no inherent rights to inspect a student's
education records. The right to inspect is limited solely to the student.
Financial assistance (aid) is awarded to students
annually (August until May). However, awards
are not automatically renewed from year to year. A student may apply for the subsequent year
when federal applications for the next year become available. A student
attending Lawson State on financial aid has certain rights and responsibilities pertaining to his/her
award.
Each student has the right to express opinions, make
suggestions, and submit grievances. Channels of communication
are always open to a student with legitimate problems. For the simplest, most
direct, and best action, a student should use the channels in the order
presented within the Student Catalog and
Handbook.
The College also expects its students and employees to be
aware that abuse of alcohol and illegal drugs has serious
negative consequences to the health of the abuser. Further, the college expects
its students and employees to obey all federal, state and local laws concerning
the possession, use, distribution, and sale of alcohol and illegal drugs. When
such violations occur on campus or during an officially sanctioned college
activity, students and employees are subject to appropriate sanctions up to and
including expulsion or termination, respectively.
Lawson State Community College recognizes that enrolled
students are both citizens and members of the academic community. Upon
enrolling in the college, all students assume an obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with
the function of the College as an educational institution. It is expected that
students are enrolled for serious educational pursuits and that they will
conduct themselves so as to assume the responsibilities of participation in the
academic community.
The College recognizes the right of both substantive and procedural due process in any matter involving
student misconduct. Students are entitled to a notice, a hearing, and an
explanation before receiving a suspension or expulsion from the college.
The College recognizes that in order
to efficiently and effectively carry-out its mission, its students and
employees must feel confident that any valid complaint or grievance
will be addressed through appropriate channels. The
College is committed to making every effort to resolve any problem that
develops among students, between student(s) and instructor(s), or students and
other college personnel. (Also see Core Requirement 4.5)
Lawson State
Community College discloses information required by the federal Student Right-To-Know and Campus Security Act of 1990. The Catalog and Handbook details the availability
of information to faculty, staff, and students to comply with the provisions of
this law.
Coursework leading to the Associate in Arts and the
Associate in Science degrees are referred to as college “transfer
programs" because they are designed to prepare the student to transfer to
a four-year college or university to pursue a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of
Science degree. Students are assigned to advisors on the basis of their
intended programs of study. Programs of study have been outlined in the catalog
to guide students in the choices within the scope and sequence of particular
courses. It is the student's responsibility to become familiar with the
requirements of the senior institution to which he or she contemplates
transferring. A student planning to transfer should follow a
prescribed transfer program in order to prevent loss of credit upon
transferring.
