Narrative:

Lawson State Community College ensures that users have access to regular and timely instruction in the use of the library and other learning/information resources by offering students instruction in the use of the learning/information resources. Library orientation is provided routinely to Orientation classes (Syllabus) and upon request. In 2006-2007, library instruction was requested in 32 classes for 1,188 students. In 2007-2008, library instruction was requested in 23 classes for 1,165 students (Library Orientation Request Form) (Library Instruction Statistics). Librarians are available to provide individual and/or small group instruction when requested. (Library Instruction Statistics Excluding PSY 100) To facilitate Library Instruction, multimedia (PowerPoint) is used when presentations are made by the Library staff to classes and individuals. Library personnel also utilize internally developed library skills exercises and (quizzes) to acquaint students with the library. Library instruction is continuously evaluated by Librarians, faculty and students. (Evaluations) Use of these results is considered when Librarians and the committees associated with the Library meet to discuss attainments and opportunities. (Committee Minutes)

To further facilitate timely library instruction, librarians have developed discipline specific brochures. (Nursing Brochure) These brochures are designed to provide students with some of the resources that can be found in the Lawson State Community College Libraries. Discipline specific study guides focusing on library/learning resources are also provided to students to facilitate the teaching and learning process. (Study Guides)

Lawson State Community College supports the teaching and learning process for all distance education programs through resources, services and instruction for students engaged in online learning. These effective services include searching the online catalog for locating books, finding articles and newspaper articles through scholarly databases. “Ask a Librarian” is also a service provided to distance learners using e-mail or telephone and access to electronic books with Net Library. Students may log into Blackboard using their Blackboard user ID and password and select the Library Resources tab at the top of the Blackboard (Sample Blackboard Snapshot) page. In addition, students may also access the Campus Library Home access distance learning link to obtain access to Distance Education Services. Students also have access to the Alabama Virtual Library (AVL Flyer) a free service of online databases with access to essential library and information resources for all residents of the State of Alabama.
