Narrative:
Lawson State Community College (LSCC) regularly evaluates the effectiveness of each faculty member according to published policies of the Alabama State Board of Education (Policy 607.01)(Policy 904.01) by following the College's procedures and guidelines as outlined in the 2007-2009 Planning & Evaluation Manual. The evaluation period runs from the beginning of the fall semester in August until end of the spring semester in May 2007-2009 Planning & Evaluation Manual (Evaluation Cycle Charts). The College's philosophy surrounding evaluation is that in is an ongoing process with a focus on continuous improvement. The evaluation tool for full-time faculty (Full-time Faculty Evaluation Instrument, Template) includes the following sections: Category I: Instructional Duties/Responsibilities; Category II: Instructional Effectiveness; Category III: Student Evaluation Results; Category IV: Professional Communication Skills & Teamwork; Category V: Personal Qualities Related to Job Performance & Essential Functions; Category VI: Safety; Professional Development & Strategic Improvement Goals. The evaluation tool for part-time (adjunct) faculty (Adjunct Evaluation Instrument) includes one broad category entitled Instructional Duties/Responsibilities.
All full-time faculty (Full Time Faculty Evaluation Sample) and adjunct (part-time) faculty (Adjunct Faculty Evaluation Samples) are evaluated annually each spring by their immediate supervisor, regardless of contractual or tenured status. In addition, at mid-year (start of the spring semester), mid-year evaluation conferences are conducted between full-time faculty members (only) and their direct supervisors to evaluate how the faculty member is performing at mid-year (2007-2009 Mid-year Conference Record Samples). Evaluation reminders or notices regarding specific due dates for both mid-year evaluations and annual evaluations are typically announced during faculty meetings and/or sent via email by either the Vice President for Instructional Services or the Academic Dean (Evaluation Emails).
On all faculty evaluations, both full and part-time, the supervisor reviews the completed evaluation form with the faculty member and discusses his or her overall teaching effectiveness and pinpoints those areas needing improvement. Upon completion, original full-time and part-time faculty evaluations are submitted to the respective Dean for review, then forwarded to the Vice President for Instructional Services for review, and then forwarded to the Human Resources Office for inclusion in the personnel folder.
In assessing the effectiveness of the faculty, student evaluations are also conducted on each faculty member at the end of each semester and are folded into the annual evaluation instrument (Student Evaluation Template & Faculty Result Samples). The results of these evaluations are shared with the faculty in order to assist them in making adjustments and improvements in their instructional strategies, methodologies, and/or delivery formats. Additionally, the supervising administrator receives copies of the results to utilize when assisting the faculty member in making professional development plans.
Also, the college provides supplemental supporting evaluation instruments (Informal Classroom Observation Form Template and Formal Classroom Observation Record Template and Sample) for supervisors to utilize while observing faculty members in the classroom, if desired. These instruments are optional and do not replace the formal mid-year or annual evaluation instruments.
