Narrative:
Alabama State Board of Education policy
706.01 (Policy 706.01)
guides Lawson State Community College in awarding college credit through
non-traditional means. Students who want to receive college credit from a
non-traditional source must abide by college policy as outlined in the Student
Catalog and Handbook (Credit
by Examination/Non-traditional credit pg. 20-21). The College awards credit through the
following non-traditional means.
·
Credit by Examination – Nursing – Students who
want to enter the Nursing Education Mobility Program and seek college credit
for nursing courses by examination.
·
Credit through Prior Learning Assessment
·
Advanced Placement
Lawson State evaluates whether or not a student achieved the
same level of proficiency through the non-credit experience as required in the
credit experience. This is done by
applying the minimum standards set forth by Alabama State Board of Education
Policy 706.01. The policy states that
all system institutions will accept for credit a score of 3 or higher on
Advanced Placement subject examinations and that credit awarded through
non-traditional means for non-academic transfer courses may be awarded through
portfolio review by a prior learning assessment specialist at the college,
through statewide articulation agreements or statewide programs identified by
the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. The policy further stipulates that not more
than 25 percent of total credit required for a program can be awarded through
non-traditional means.
Policies regarding the awarding of credit through
non-traditional means are available in the Student Catalog and Handbook and on
the institution’s website. To ensure
adherence to the policy, the Registrar, Director of Admissions or the Assistant
Dean for Admissions and Records must review any credit awarded to a student.
