Narrative:
The mission of Lawson
State Community College (Mission Statement) supports the mission of the Alabama Community College System (Policy 108.01) Alabama Community College
System Mission Statement. The
College is a comprehensive, public, two-year community college that seeks to
provide accessible quality educational opportunities, promote economic growth
and enhance the quality of life for people in its service area. The College offers services in academic
education, adult education and workforce development as indicated in the
Overview of the Alabama Community College System (About ACCS).
The legal authority for
the approval of the institution’s mission statement is the responsibility of
the State Board of Education. The college includes the mission statement and
goals in its ongoing planning process.
Lawson State Community College’s mission is periodically reviewed and
evaluated based on the local policy entitled Mission Statement Review Policy (Mission Review Policy). This review begins with
the Planning Sub-Committee of the President’s Administrative Council (March 26 Minutes)
then it requires the approval of the Administrative Cabinet (Minutes from April
7) and finally the State Board of Education (Letter of
approval).
According to the job
description for Presidents in community colleges in the Alabama Community
College System, the President of Lawson State Community College is empowered by
the Alabama State Board of Education to “provide effective leadership and
management for the overall direction of the institution:, “develop annual and
long range goals for the college”, and “direct long-range planning activities…”
