The governing board of the
institution is responsible for the selection and the periodic evaluation of the
chief executive officer. (CEO

Narrative:
The designated chief
executive officer of Lawson State Community College is the president. The Alabama State Board of Education Policy
203.01 President: Recruitment and Selection, (Policy 203.01), states that when there is a presidential vacancy, the Chancellor
may recommend the transfer of a current system President to fill the vacancy or
follow procedures to advertise and search for a president. If the position is advertised, the Chancellor
and the State Board of Education will interview the top three (3) applicants. The Chancellor will make a recommendation of
one of the three applicants to the State Board of Education. The State Board of Education appoints the
president according to State Board of Education Policy 203.02: President:
Line of Authority (Policy 203.02). The president serves at the will of the State
Board of Education and answers to the Chancellor and the State Board of
Education for the administration of the institution in accordance with all laws
and board policies; Policy 102.04: Chancellor:
Decision-making Authority (Policy 102.04).

According to Alabama
State Board of Education Policy 607.01:
Evaluation of Personnel (Policy 607.01); The Chancellor evaluates
the performance of Presidents of institutions under the authority, direction,
and control of the State Board of Education, using appropriate evaluation
instruments and methods. The components
of the evaluation include: budget and financial performance, fund raising initiatives,
the physical plant, the instructional program, student services, workforce
development, adult education, presidential involvement, promotion of the
college, institutional planning and management, and professional development. (Sample Evaluation)
The procedure used in
evaluating the chief executive officer is as follows:
The Chancellor shall
evaluate the performance of Presidents of institutions under the authority,
direction and control of the State Board of Education, using appropriate
evaluation instruments and methods. The
results of such evaluations shall be reported to the State Board of
Education. Those individuals having
served as President at these institutions for a period of three (3) years or
less shall be evaluated annually. Those
individuals having served as President for a period of more than three (3)
years shall be evaluated at least biennially.
Using the results of the evaluations and the President’s professional
development plan, the Chancellor shall devise as necessary for each a
professional development plan to address any deficiencies identified through
the evaluation process. The Chancellor
may employ the services of a third party or other entity to evaluate
Presidents. Written results of the
evaluation shall be reported to each President within a reasonable period of
time following the conclusion of the evaluation process. Each evaluation shall become a part of the
personnel file of the president maintained in the offices of the Alabama
Department of Postsecondary Education.
Such files shall be subject to federal and state statutes governing the
maintenance and preservation of personnel records. The Chancellor, from time to time, may
appoint a committee or committees to review and assess the evaluation policy,
guidelines and procedures.
