Core Requirement 2.7.3
In each undergraduate
degree program, the institution requires the successful completion of a general
education component at the collegiate level that is (1) a substantial component
of each undergraduate degree, (2) ensures breadth of knowledge, and (3) is
based on a coherent rationale. For degree completion in associate programs, the
component constitutes a minimum of 15 semester hours or the equivalent; for
baccalaureate programs, a minimum of 30 semester hours or the equivalent. These
credit hours are to be drawn from and include at least one course from each of
the following areas: humanities/fine arts, social/behavioral sciences, and
natural science/mathematics. The courses do not narrowly focus on those skills,
techniques, and procedures specific to a particular occupation or profession.
If an institution uses a unit other than semester credit hours, it provides an
explanation for the equivalency. The institution also provides a justification
if it allows for fewer than the required number of semester credit hours or its
equivalent unit of general education courses. (General Education)

Narrative:
The
Associate in Science and Associate in Arts degree programs (General
Education Purpose ) require the successful completion of two collegiate level English
composition courses (six semester hours), one collegiate level speech course
(three semester hours), three other collegiate level humanities/fine arts
courses (nine semester hours), one collegiate level mathematics course (three
semester hours), two collegiate level natural science courses (eight semester
hours), and four collegiate level social/behavioral sciences courses (twelve
semester hours). The Associate in Applied Science and the Associate in
Occupational Technology degrees require a basic general education core,
including at least one course each in written composition, humanities/fine
arts, speech, history, social/behavioral sciences, natural sciences,
mathematics, and computer science. All degree programs meet
requirements set forth by the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education.
The College’s general education courses for the Associate degrees are approved
by the Articulation and General Studies Committee (AGSC) and are part of the Statewide Transfer and Articulation Reporting
System (STARS) for transfer to two- and four-year institutions. (Alabama STARS).

The general education
component of each program ensures a breadth of knowledge by requiring at least
one course from each of the following areas: written composition; humanities
and fine arts; history and social/behavioral sciences; and natural science/mathematics (A.A. and A.S. Degree) (A.A.S.
and A.O.T. Degrees).
All general education
courses are at the collegiate level as evidenced by the Articulation and General Studies Committee (AGSC). The AGSC oversees the work
of the Statewide Transfer and Articulation System (Alabama STARS) that allows students, and
college personnel to obtain the most current transfer information. Basically, the
system provides the student a mechanism to form a contract that guarantees
transferability of coursework with an upper division college or university in
the state of Alabama (Policy 907.01).
