Narrative:
Lawson State Community College has a clearly defined
and published mission statement appropriate for higher education. The mission
statement addresses teaching and
learning and public service. Lawson State Community College is not a research
institution. The mission statement is published in appropriate college
documents including the LSCC Student College Catalog
and on the college website
(Mission and Goal Statement).
The mission of the college, as approved on
August 28, 2008, by the Alabama State Board of Education, (Minutes
08-28-08), is “to provide
accessible quality educational opportunities, promote economic growth and
enhance the quality of life for people in its service area. The College is
dedicated to providing affordable and accessible lifelong learning
opportunities in order to prepare students for employment or career advancement
as well as enable students to transfer to senior colleges and universities, and
provide customized training needs for business and industry.”
The statement is appropriate for higher
education in that it includes accessible educational opportunities, promotes
economic growth and enhances the quality of life for people in the College’s
service area. The mission addresses
teaching and learning for students through its transfer program to senior
colleges and universities and public service programs and activities translate
into accessible lifelong learning opportunities for the citizenry. The College’s customized training meets the
needs of business and industry in addition to promoting a healthy economy and a
prepared workforce.
