Narrative:
Lawson State Community College has
adequate physical resources to support the mission of the institution and the
scope of its programs and services. The
College’s most recent building
inventory and facilities
master plan indicate the nature of facilities as well as
those planned for both campuses. The facilities
at all locations are well maintained and attractive as demonstrated by the good
approval rating from the annual maintenance
survey.
Lawson State Community College’s
Facilities Master Plan recognizes the institution’s need for significant
improvements over the next ten years.
This document takes into consideration student enrollment and demand for
educational programs and services, facilities’ deterioration/loss, programmatic
certification criteria, and campus safety needs.
The college has two campuses. The Birmingham Campus is located at 3060
Wilson Road, Birmingham, Alabama and the Bessemer Campus is located at 1100 9th
Avenue S.W., Bessemer, Alabama. The
college maintains over 635,268 square feet of total building facilities. Of this total, over 455,385 square feet or 72% is allocated for
instructional use and student use. The
college maintains adequate physical resources through preventive maintenance,
inspections, and a work-order system. Maintenance of the facilities is
completed on a daily basis and incorporates daily inspections and
follow-through of needs on buildings and grounds. The college purchases liability
and property insurance. Facilities personnel are responsible for
inspecting campus facilities and reporting any findings to the Chief Fiscal
Officer. Fiscal personnel submit necessary adjustments to the College’s
insurance carrier, the State of Alabama Department of Risk Management.
The Department of Facilities is
responsible for the maintenance of all buildings and grounds of the college. Requests
for maintenance and/or custodial needs are received via e-mail or campus mail
and are assigned to the appropriate employee(s). The college employs a grounds crew that is
responsible for the general maintenance and appearance of the grounds and
property. Their jobs involve mowing,
landscaping, leaf and trash removal, etc.
The college also employs housekeeping staff that are responsible for the
general maintenance and upkeep of buildings.
Annually, a maintenance
survey is conducted of faculty, staff and students to
determine how effective these tasks are.
Analysis of the results indicates that a majority of respondents believe
that academic buildings and offices are adequately maintained. Responses also indicate that a majority of
respondents (80.4%) believe that the overall appearance of the campus grounds
is good or better.
