Eligibility Guidelines
Eligibility
guidelines for scholarships at Lawson State
Community College differ depending upon whether you
are a new student, currently enrolled student, or by
a
student's program of study. The eligibility
guidelines are defined below by category:
New Students
(applicants who have not attended a college before)
may qualify for the following scholarships:

Applicants must have on file an
admission application, scholarship application,
letter of recommendation, official high school
transcript
including the last semester
attended showing a 3.0 or above cumulative grade
point average and the date of graduation, and the
Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA).
All materials must be on file before the April 15th
deadline date. Applicants will be notified of their
financial aid award package including all
scholarships, grants, and work-study on or before
July 30th.

Currently Enrolled Students
Currently enrolled students must complete the
scholarship application, including a letter of
recommendation. A processed FAFSA must also be
submitted by June 15th. Scholarships for
currently enrolled students are awarded in one of
three categories (see below).
Freshman
Students
Freshmen student must have earned 12-32 credit hours
in 100 level courses with a minimum cumulative grade
point average of 3.00. 50% tuition will be
awarded.
Sophomore
Students
Sophomore students must have
earned 33 or more credit hours in 100 level courses
with a minimum cumulative grade point average of
3.50. 75% tuition will be awarded.
Transfer
Students
Transfer students must be enrolled at Lawson State
Community College one semester prior to completing a
scholarship application, have a minimum 3.00
cumulative grade point average and 12 or more
semester hours of 100 level courses. 50%
tuition will be awarded.

Other Scholarships
Other scholarships such as Performing Arts,
Leadership, Ambassador, Pastor's Educational
Scholarship, Cheerleading, and Dance Team are
available. Criteria for these scholarships
includes active participation set by the advisors

Private Scholarships
Private scholarships are available based on specific
criteria established by the agencies or
organizations sponsoring the scholarships.
Assistance is also provided for students who
transfer to other colleges and universities.
GED Recipients
GED recipients on or after
July 1, 2002 may receive one free course at Lawson
State Community College. However, students may
use the free course only once at any Alabama Two
Year College and eligibility if verified through the
Department of Postsecondary Education before tuition
credit is applied to a student's account. Students must
complete the GED Free Course Request Form and may
acquire this form on the website or at either campus
(Birmingham or Bessemer) location of the Admissions
Office.

Senior Citizen
Tuition Waivers:
Persons age 60 or over may receive tuition
scholarships. Such persons must follow
standard admissions procedures and meet all course
prerequisites as stated in the catalog.
Waivers apply ONLY to college-credit courses and
do not include books, fees, supplies, or tools.
Registration will take place during regular
registration periods. Available space will not
be assured until the last day of late registration.
In the event space is no longer available, such
persons will be required to withdraw from the
course.

Award Process
The recipient must complete an agreement form and
submit it to the Office of Student Financial
Services before the recipient receives his / her
award letter. The award letter includes the
type of scholarship that has been awarded, the level
of the award, the duration of the award as well as
any other provide state / federal financial aid
assistance. Note that students receiving
academic scholarships for tuition only are
responsible for paying any fees and / or textbook
costs.
Recipients must enroll in 12-18 semester credit
hours per semester depending upon their degree plan.
The duration of the scholarship is for one academic
year (fall and spring semesters) and for one program
of study. If the student chooses to enroll for
summer term, the student must take 9-12 semester
credit hours to receive a scholarship.
The Scholarship Committee monitors a recipient's
academic progress each semester to determine if the
scholarship is renewable. A student must
maintain a cumulative minimum 3.00 grade point
average or higher each semester. If, at any
time, the cumulative grade point average falls below
3.00, the student forfeits the scholarship.
Renewal Process
A student must file a letter by June 15th requesting
continuation of her / his scholarship. The
letter must include a transcript showing her / his
spring semester grades. Also, a processed
FAFSA for the next year must be submitted by June
15th.
