Lawson State to Hold Spring and Adult Education Ceremonies on Saturday Mayor William Bell to Speak at Spring Commencement
BIRMINGHAM, AL (May 6, 2011) - Birmingham Mayor William Bell will deliver the spring commencement address for Lawson State Community College at 10:00 a.m. May 7 at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center, East Exhibition Hall II.
Birmingham City Councilor Johnathan Austin, Chair of the Public Safety Committee, will speak at the Adult Education Graduation at 3:00 p.m. at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center, East Exhibition Hall II.
Lawson State will award degrees and certificates to an estimated 600 students who have satisfied requirements for graduation. The public is invited to share in this special occasion.
With a long and flourishing career as a public servant, Mayor Bell most recently served as president pro tem for the Jefferson County Commission. He previously served as interim mayor of Birmingham in 1999 and on the Birmingham city council for several terms.
In 1985 during his third term, he was elected by his fellow council members to serve as the first African-American President of the Birmingham City Council. He was again chosen as Birmingham City Council President in 1987 and 1997.
Mayor Bell is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he received his Master’s Degree in Psychology and Guidance Counseling. He also holds a Doctorate in Jurisprudence from Miles Law School, with extensive professional experience in community and economic development in both the public and private sectors.
Mayor Bell is married to Dr. Sharon Carson Bell and they have two children, both graduates of Ramsay High School and the University of Alabama.
