Lawson State Offers 21st Century Robotics Academy

June 2011 - Lawson State Community College invites students entering the 10th, 11th and 12th grade to come and discover the world of robotics and manufacturing on the Bessemer campus in a summer camp running June 13 – 16 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  The always fun and educational 21st Century Robotics Academy will give high school students the chance to work with robotic arms, industrial robots, Manufacturing Product Line (MPS), Lego Mindstorm®, Wow Wee Robots and Lawson State’s own HE-RO-BOT.

Robotics is swiftly growing in relevancy in today’s workforce as a branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation, structural disposition, manufacture and application of robots.  Robotics is related to the sciences of electronics, engineering, mechanics, and software.  Participants of the 21st Century Robotics Academy will explore robotic engineering each day.    Lawson State Community College is a member of the Consortium for Alabama Regional Center of Automotive Manufacturing (CARCAM), a regional center for Advanced Technological Education (ATE) funded through the National Science Foundation.  “This affiliation has allowed Lawson State to equip a state of the art robotics and automated manufacturing lab,” said Nancy Wilson, manufacturing and engineering division chair at Lawson State. “The college provides training for ABB, Fanuc, Kuka, Mitsubishi, and Motoman industrial robots.”

All interested students entering the fields of robotics and manufacturing shouldn’t miss out on this rare chance to get hands-on experience in today’s most up-to-date robotics technology! Scholarships are available and lunch will be provided each day.  Parents and students should call (205) 929-3451 or email for registration.
