Lawson State Hosts Inaugural Community Breakfast

BESSEMER, AL - Lawson State Community College hosted the Inaugural meeting of the Greater Bessemer Community Forum linking education, government, business and other entities together for purposes of community advancement.

The event featured breakfast dining for those in attendance as well as an opportunity to connect the many networks of the Bessemer community. Much like the Western Quarterly Forum hosted in Birmingham, the Greater Bessemer Community Forum provided an occasion for participants to address areas of concern in order to advance academics and public enrichment matters in the greater Bessemer area.

Jefferson County Commissioner Bobby Humphryes was featured as the guest speaker. Humphryes provided updates on topics of interest relative to the County such as the debt being faced by the Jefferson County Sewer Department. After providing a brief description of the Chapter 9 Bankruptcy filing that stands before the Commission as one of its few solutions, Humphryes gave his position on the current crisis and invited discussion from the audience on other issues and solutions. “I support the bankruptcy filing,” Humphryes said. “This will mean bankruptcy filing for the Jefferson County Sewer Department, not the county as a whole.”

Lawson State President Perry W. Ward provided a presidential review that spotlighted the Allied Health Building proposal that is to be submitted to the new Obama Administration soon. “The facility would give more capacity to the College’s Allied Health Programs,” Ward said.  “These courses, geared specifically toward medical administration, pharmacy and medical billing studies as well as the labs associated with them held currently at the Bessemer Campus, could be given a stand-alone facility should the Lawson State request be met.”  This proposal is also endorsed by Commissioner Humphryes.
