Lawson State Foundation and Wachovia Dedicate West Bessemer Building

BESSEMER, AL, MAY 12, 2010 - In a recent dedication ceremony, Wachovia, A Wells Fargo Company, officially transferred the former bank property located at 1094 Ninth Avenue Southwest on the Bessemer Super Highway to the Lawson State Community College Foundation.  This highly anticipated occasion was attended by bank officials, elected officials, Lawson State Foundation and college officials, and students who applauded the ceremonial transfer at the building.

In addressing the gathering, Foundation Anthony Underwood, Foundation director, acknowledged the donation.  “We are proud to be the recipient of this gift,” said Underwood.  “This generous gesture by Wachovia and Wells Fargo allows us to enhance and expand the services already offered in the local community.  Residents and students will benefit immensely for decades to come. “

The West Bessemer building and property becomes the newest campus addition to Lawson State through the Foundation.   The college will use the approximately 5,000-square-foot building to sponsor programs focusing on economic well-being as it relates to health care planning, financial planning for health related services such as long-term care insurance and wellness planning for the workforce.  The college will continue to work cooperatively with Medical West, an affiliate of the UAB Health System and other health related agencies in the community to sponsor such activities.

The building was dedicated in memory of Eva Hudson and Sheila Prevo, two Wachovia tellers who lost their lives in a shooting incident at the building on May 14, 2007.  Two other employees were wounded.  A plaque in honor of the victims was unveiled and family members were acknowledged.

Wachovia subsequently closed the building for unrelated reasons when it opened another branch in the Tannehill area nearby.

Lawson State’s president, Dr. Perry W. Ward, took part in the ceremony today and said, “While what happened here was a great tragedy and our hearts go out to all of those affected so deeply, this donation will help us expand our services to students and the neighboring community.  We are very grateful.

Said Mike Donnelly, the bank’s regional president for Alabama, “We will never forget that awful day, but it is our hope that this will help our community come to some closure and that Lawson State’s beneficial activities will help us with our grief.”
