Lawson State Awarded $3.1 Million for Student Support Services

September 2010 – BIRMINGHAM, AL - Lawson State Community College has been awarded two Student Support Services grants over a five-year funding cycle from the U. S. Department of Education to assist the educational needs and goals of students.  The Bessemer campus was funded at $290,291 and the Birmingham campus was funded at $345,090 each annually for five years.  The total award commencing in September 2010 will be $3,176,905.

Student Support Services is a selective program offering strategies to help students maintain acceptable grade point averages.  The program is offered to students who must either be a first generation college student, qualify as low income or have a documented disability (physical emotional and/or learning).  Activities include tutoring assistance, academic advising, personal counseling, and educational and cultural enrichment activities.

“Both grants were very well written and received exceptional ratings,” said Dr. Cynthia Anthony, dean of students. “This is reflective of the hard work and dedication of our Student Support Services staff, especially Sandra Howard and Elijah Anthony, directors of the Birmingham and Bessemer campuses, respectively.”
